New England Mutual Life Company (first) is established.

Founded by Judge Willard Phillips, it is located initially at 28 State Street. The first chartered mutual life insurance company in the U.S., it was incorporated in 1835. The company moves to a new building (second) at the corner of Milk and Congress Streets in 1874* and to its current location (third) Boylston Street in 1942.* The company is purchased by Metropolitan Life in 1996 and subsequently renamed New England Financial.
